A Short Story with Real Names

I'm reading Thy Neighbor's Wife by Gay Talese. It's a study of sex in the US, but it's also the history of censorship in America. In The New New Journalism, Talese states: "I just want to write about people in a way that is a short story with real names." He continues: "I don't know who the characters are at the beginning. I don't know the story, but I do know the stage of the theater. I find the characters by simply showing up at the 'theater.' As I spend more time in there, they emerge. It's almost as if I imagine them, and then, they mysteriously appear."

Death of a Woodsman

Jon Dough is dead: "'The exploitation of the male' in the adult business, porn star Nina Hartley told me, 'is very distinct, in that he must cut off his dick from his heart.' This wasn't as true in the days when the porn world was more of a community that sustained a certain collegiality and longer-term relationships. 'Now, it's much more assembly-line nature.' And those who can't shut their hearts and minds off, she said, get chewed up in the gears." --Stiffed: The Betrayal of the American Man

Off with Her Head

A long time ago, I walked off the set of a porn movie. Lizzy Borden was the director. On December 8, 2005, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit reinstated a 10-count obscenity indictment against Robert Zicari, aka Rob Black, and Janet Romano, aka Lizzy Borden.

13

"American Bukkake 11" was the first time I took photos in Porn Valley. Kiki D'Aire was the star of the movie. It took place on a soundstage in North Hollywood. There were nearly 100 men there. I shot more photos at "American Bukkake 13." And "American Bukkake 18." A year ago, a man sent me an email in the middle of the night. He had been watching one of these movies. At one point, he said, I stepped into frame, took a picture, and stepped out of frame. At that time, I had thought maybe I could leave bukkake behind me. Now I know I always be stepping in it.

Flash Point

The first porn movie set I was ever on was for "Flashpoint." It was a sweltering hot, late summer day. Not far from me, seven people were having an orgy atop a fire truck in the middle of a parking lot. I looked to my left at the line of other writers gathered there to cover the day's events for magazines with names like Cheri. They were all men, they were all older than me, and they were all not me. That night, inside an abandoned building, I saw what happened when put a naked Jenna Jameson over a barrel with flames shooting up all around her. I knew I was in a different kind of a place. It wasn't until a few days ago that I realized what flash point means. After that, everything made sense.

The First Porn Star

Jenna Jameson was the first porn star I ever met. It was late 1997. I went to her hotel room in San Francisco. That night, she was feature dancing with Jill Kelly at the O'Farrell Theatre. She showed me the tattoo on the back of her neck. She had tiny ankles. Later, she came on stage, and she had been transformed into something else altogether.

Porn Happy

I'm back at work on Porn Happy, a novel based on my experiences in Porn Valley. I had to start it over again. Sometimes, that's how it goes.

United States v. American Bukkake

I'm writing a story for Salon about bukkake. See also: United States v. American Bukkake; I was on the set of "American Bukkake 13." Years ago, I created "American Bukkake Too." Bukkake, it seems, never dies.

I Kill Everything I Fuck

A long time ago, I went to Porn Valley. Today, I am working on a proposal for a nonfiction book about the porn industry. This is my agent. What will happen next to the Reverse Cowgirl? We will see.
