Oh, FUCK

Last week, a couple things happened that I didn't blog about, and then that and some other things made blogging difficult this week, and then while I still can't talk about one of them, tonight I realized, well, I could talk about the other at least, and at this point in the story, I'm sure I've gone on so long that you've lost interest. Anyway, I got an email, oh, a week or so, I suppose, maybe more than that, from Mark Graham, who is a nice man and the managing editor of Defamer. Which is like the blackly opaque cinematic eye of the giant, blogosphere-eating robot that is Gawker Media. So, Mark wanted to know if I was interested in being in the running to become an addition to the Defamer team, or however you want to put it, you know, a Defamer editor. And I was, like, um, yeah. Because that's how I roll. Slutty. After all, I am not nor have I always been, uh, "just" a sex writer. I write about culture. (At least that's what I tell myself sometimes.) And once upon a time, thanks to David Poland, I was a movie critic, and for a while I was, like, a movie critic pundit on a FX TV show hosted by Chris Gore. And I guess you could look at my, er, "interest" in pornography as also being about movies. Whatever. Anyhoo, so I didn't blog about it, because, I don't know, maybe I figured I wasn't supposed to, but then it occurred to me no one told me not to, and then I started writing this. Actually, I started writing this because I saw this, which is some kind of Gawker internal memo in which somebody tells everybody to stop swearing so much on all the Gawker sites, from what I gather. And a part of me was like, Oh, shit. Because I'm already worried that everyone just thinks I'm a big pervert and can't bring anything to the table but a bunch of well-worn bukkakes tales. (I mean, you know, you never know.) As part of the auditioning process, I had to make a demo blog, with three demo posts, and two out of three of them were about sex. I wasn't sure if that was the right thing to do or not, but then I thought about how Santino got all freaked out on "Project Runway" and lost in the finals because he lost himself, and then I was, like, fuck it. I yam what I yam. Now they're deciding if they're going to give me a test run as a guest blogger on the site--or not. So far, the only contender I know of is a soap opera writer. So, hey! You never know. Either way, not writing about things that are happening is never good for me. To be clear, this isn't the other thing that I blogged about obtusely last week, the thing that I said had made me so happy that I cried. I'd really, really like to write for Defamer, but, you know, I'm not gonna cry about it. Not yet, anyway. That other thing is something else. Something that is pretty great. Something that has kind of freaked me out a bit. These last three years were God's great kick in the teeth to me, and it hasn't been easy. But things like these make me want to take back the ball and throw it really hard at the back of somebody's head, like, I told you, motherfucker. If that makes sense, great. If not, I can't explain it.

J. Orlin Grabbe Dies

James Orlin Grabbe, who was a regular linker to this blog, has died, a Reverse Cowgirl reader reports. The front page of Grabbe's site now reads: "We are sorry to inform you that James Orlin Grabbe passed away in his home in Costa Rica on March 15th, 2008. He will be missed, Godspeed Orlin." Wikipedia reports the cause of death was heart failure. Grabbe was an internationally renowned scientist and author whose interests ranged from finance to fractals. His obsessively updated ur-blog was a deeply eclectic mix of chaos theory, cryptology, and conspiracy theories--all peppered with photographs of naked women. "When asked about the girls on his page, Orlin Grabbe is said to always have given the same message: It is my page and I alone decide what goes on it. I like beautiful images and the pictures of the naked girls keep those away who I don't want to visit." The archives live here.

Oriana Small aka Ashley Blue on Paul Little aka Max Hardcore

Late last week, Max Hardcore was found guilty on obscenity charges. In response, Oriana Small weighs in with a post on her blog: "Emotional Audience." In her unique blogku style, the adult performer deems the decision "unjust" and proclaims Hardcore, whose movies are routinely labeled misogynist, "the most unique pornographer in the business." Instead, Small, who regularly blogs her sometimes extreme sex life with her partner, photographer Dave Naz, speaks out for adults' rights to "partake in consensual piss-guzzling, ass-fucking and vomiting." The entry is accompanied by a series of photos in which Hardcore appears to be attempting to insert his entire hand into Small's mouth.

King Shit of Turd Hill

The VideoBox Blog named this blog one of "The 8 Best Porn Blogs on the Web." Is this a porn blog? I guess it doesn't really matter. Does it?

Tumblrs Are Fun

Did you know I Tumblr? Because I do. I really enjoy it. I like the stream-of-consciousness of it, that the tumblesphere is smaller and more intimate like the blogosphere used to be, because it's one of the few things I do online where I don't have to think. Also, it's pretty. More painterly, I think. I post a quote and an image there once a day, five days a week. Its current format was inspired by a blog I love(d), Riley Dog, R.I.P. These days, you can peek at Riley Dog proprietor Steve's online meanderings by way of his Google Reader.

Reverse Cowgirl Ads

As I've been mentioning lately, I'm looking to start running ads on this blog. I've received some queries and have ad rates for those who are interested.

I'm interested in exploring blog ad providers. Do you work with Blogads and are interested in being my sponsor?

Are you a company interested in advertising on Reverse Cowgirl?

Are you savvy about advertising matters and interested in offering advice?

Let me know.

"Trouble Selling Sex" (via Dacia) illustrates some of the challenges faced by online creatives working with sexual content.

Blogs You Should Be Reading: The Daily Siege & The Constant Siege

If you're a regular Reverse Cowgirl reader, you already know Clayton Cubitt, aka Siege, a friend of mine and one of the most talented photographers shooting today. These days, so many artist cave to commercialism and leave us to see the world through their dead, commodified eyes. Not so for Siege, who has turned the act of pushing the envelope artistically into a performance art unto itself.

In a profile, I posited Siege as a shock photographer. And he is that, but more. In recent posts on his Nerve blog, The Daily Seige, worth the surcharge to see his work alone, he will pop your eye out with thisclose shots of hardcore penetration. Now, you can also see how the mind behind the lens works on his Tumblr, The Constant Siege, where what inspires him flashes before you like a peepshow.

Of the supine beauty in red light, he wrote:

"Roughly translated:
'So far so good.
But the important thing is not the fall...
it's the landing.'"

Best Sex Blogs 2007

Every year, the entire internet eagerly awaits my Best Sex Blogs 2007 list. Well, not really. This is its first year. Apropos of nothing, here are a few of my favorite sex and sex-themed blogs in no particular order.

Confessions of a College Callgirl: The title of this blog says it all. Heartbreakingly honest posts from a former sex workers who tells the truth of what it's really like to work inside the American sex trade.

Sexerati: Melissa Gira is the sex writer of the future. Somebody get her a PhD in sexology. Her smart, savvy writing moves your mind.

Sex and Blogs: The go-to clearing house for all things sex-related. If you only go to one sex blog a day, go to this one. And then go to mine.

PonyXpress: If you wanna ride a sex blog, ride the PonyXpress. This cacophony of sexy pix 'n' erotic links has the kind of edgy approach to sex you don't get in America. Because we're retarded.

The Pussy Ranch: Not a sex blog. Stripper-turned-screenwriter Diablo Cody gives readers a peek at her life in the glamorous lane.

The Daily Siege: There but for the grace of God goes Siege's sex blog. Here, photographer Clayton Cubitt exposes his life in front of the lens in exquisitely beautiful, eye-popping detail. Not for the faint-o-heart.

J. Orlin Grabbe: Who is J. Orlin Grabbe? I have no idea. But if you like your quantum physics with pix of nekkid chix, he's your man.

Ashley Blue: Just read it.

Fluffy Lychees: Mr. Fluffy takes all things sexual--photos, art, commentary--puts them in a blender, and creates a visually stimulating tour through sexuality in the new millennium.

Indie Nudes: The master. The legend. A god among sex blogs.

One of My Favorite Blogs

One of my favorite blogs is Foto Decadent, a blog where people from all around the world post pages from fashion magazines from all around the world. Here, the focus is avant-garde photography, although many come for the avant-garde fashion and the avant-garde models. This recent post is a new favorite of mine. The photographer is Daniel Jackson, the model is 19-year-old Meghan Collison, and the pages are taken from recent issues of Russian and Japanese Vogue.

Portrait of the Porn Star as a Young Artist

Oriana Small, aka Ashley Blue, has another terrific blog post. This time, she writes about dressing up like a toilet for Halloween, how she's reprogramming her abused brain, and the new Britney Spears.
I wore a toilet seat on my head as a Halloween costume.
I want to be a toilet sometimes...
I'm using my brain again.
It's been seriously neglected and abused for the last five years.
Exercise of the mind is a continuous high.

Girl Can't Help It

Ashley Blue's blog is like no other. On it, Blue--whose real name is Oriana Small--reveals the real girl behind the porn star. Blue is--or at least was--a porn star like no other. She has starred in some of the most extreme porn movies ever made. According to IMDB, she has appeared in over 200 adult videos, among them: "Ashley Blue AKA Filthy Whore," "American Bukkake 26," and "Gag Factor 15." Take "American Bukkake 26," for example, in which Blue fed fried cum to a bukkake girl. ("It was amazing," she later noted.) Her performances have not gone unnoticed. Last year, "Gag Factor 15," in which Blue reenacts a scene out of Abu Ghraib, was listed in an 18-count federal obscenity indictment. Her blog, though, shows another side of the sex star. There, in a stream-of-consciousness assemblage of words and pictures that's part tumblelog, part haiku, and part Molly Bloom's monologue, Blue--that is, Small--exposes the woman behind the sex with unrivaled intensity. This is a blog that stars the usual suspects found on confessional blogs--the boyfriend (erotic photographer Dave Naz), the new puppy, the night out on the town. Blue takes blogging to a whole new level. In one post, she drinks her boyfriend's piss from a glass. Most provocatively, Blue reveals what it feels like to be a girl who sells sex for a living struggling to come out the other side a new woman. Recently, she has begun taking her own photographs, doing charcoal drawings, painting a nude self-portrait. She writes: "I felt really hard at one time/Note the single tear of joy/I am the lucky one."

Welcome the Harpoonist

My BFF, writer Lydia Jenkins, has launched a new blog. It's called The Harpoonist. She'll be writing about all things literary, posting book reviews, and contemplating her navel as she writes her novel.
