Behold the Future of Posthuman Pornography [Updated]

In "Posthumans Go Hollywood! (Maybe.)," Charlie Jane Anders wonders: "Are we finally going to get a posthuman mass culture?"

What's "posthuman"?

Anders:
For the purposes of this post, I'm thinking of posthumans as "vanilla" humans who get upgraded somehow, either by becoming cyborgs, or connecting their minds to cyberspace, or becoming part-alien, or enhancing their bodies with nanotech, biotech or some other improvements.
Anders posits posthumans in Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go and James Cameron's forthcoming "Avatar" offer humans a "a new dose of optimism and escapism." It's like Obama, with a microchip. We're all Obamabots now.

These days, I'm working on an essay on the future of Porn Valley. (In a word? Bleak.) It's gotten me thinking about the future of pornography. I'd like to venture my ideas here, but I should probably save them for my article.

Premise: Porn Valley is dying.

Question: What do you think posthuman pornography would look like?

Email me.

If I get some interesting responses, I'll add them in updates to this post.

Update 1: Paul Blume:
Not so sure it will "look" particularly different in any way -- perhaps a greater emphasis on extremities of size/elasticity/mutability coupled with a freedom to maim/kill one's partner or one's self -- but rather will concentrate on virtually generated physical sensation via the still gestating technology of teledildonics.

If anything, posthuman porn -- should it actually ever come to be -- will be the first to be almost utterly divorced from the body and wholly concentrated, instead, in the brain.
Update 2: Peter Tupper:
People with extensive body modification or cosmetic surgery, particularly if it isn't meant to look "natural", like Sabrina Sabrok or the late Lolo Ferrari, could be considered early posthumans. Body modification is already doing what fashion used to do (i.e. the gym sculpted, lipo-suctioned body instead of the corset) and it may be a matter of time until we have designer body mods.

In terms of pornography, you'd need something that made a strong visual impact. For instance, a drug that temporarily shuts off your melanin production, giving you albinism. Such visible forms of body modification could be linked to subcultures that promote sexual freedom. This kind of technology will make it to the streets, like transpeople who use gray-market hormones. The viewer develops a fetish that "blanco girls" are hot, and somebody sets up www.whitehotgirls.com.

Though not post-human, I think in the next few years we'll see porn influenced by the iconography of the War on Terror, with Muslim extremists providing the threatening Other group that will be eroticized/exoticized, just as Nazis were in the late 20th century and the Catholic Church was in the 18th and 19th centuries. Look for veiling and masking, "naked under her burqa", interrogation scenarios, that kind of thing.
Update 3: Cavalor Epthith:
Posthumanism, at its most fundamental level, will be the ability to go beyond death since death is the ultimate human act. To do this the petit mort must become the grand mort and the experience must be able to allow the entertained to be able to answer the question, "Is there sex after death?" with a resounding "Yes!"

I found the io9.com article most interesting for while it dealt with concepts like the Terminator, it totally ignored characters like Constantine and the burden of knowing Paradise and Hell both existing and waiting on the other side of the divide. In both, there must be sex because it is the ultimate act of succor and or punishment. On a more technical level, posthuman pornography will be at once utterly selfish and mutually gratifying. A posthuman can defy most social conventions regarding sex without committing any crime. One can extrapolate with their own imagination what this would mean for a society that would still have its bulk a mere human substrate of billions of Souls that are nothing more than templates of desire for a few demigods. As time marches forward, however, and the desire to reach that new height of release beckons ever louder all would becomes deities in their own right seeking their own "big bangs."
Update 4: Ayzad:
In the long run, the game will probably be played entirely at direct neural stimulation level. As soon as we have the technology, you can be sure that somebody will develop a gadget to excite the pleasure centers of the brain without the aggravation of "superfluous" elements like fantasy scenarios, foreplay or whatever - plug 'n' come, if you will. I imagine the rise of a iPleazure-junkie subculture with lots of similarities to the heroin plague of the Seventies, with many people choosing to get out of an ever-depressing life and waste away in synthetic happiness - both as a statement and an addiction.

Sometimes along the line (I really don't know if earlier, later or concurrently with the above mentioned period) it is also easy to envision some kind of working virtual reality porn coming up. I think that before-regulations Second Life was a very good example of the diversity of sexual experiences people would be interested in exploring if they were: available, free, good-quality, customizable, interactive. Of course SL is way shitty, but it is only a matter of time until technology catches up with the (admittedly low) expectations of the average porn user. Add up half-good haptic interfaces, and you'll have a world full of otaku-like wankers.

Thinking about it, if the Singularity theory is right you could sum it all up in people living more and more in their custom virtual spaces to have fun (read: sex-type experiences) while their AI avatars go on conducting business for them semi-autonomously.

What I DON'T see is the porn industry surviving very well. Projecting from the current situation of the online minority, porn is going to be more and more free, customized and "user-created" - three lines not viable for any industry. Maybe for a while we'll keep seeing the current strategy of trying to launch zillions of different imaginary fetishes in the hope that one of them sticks (case in point: zombies raping girls didn't work, pedal pumping did; ass milkshakes didn't work, bukkake did...), but sooner or later even that will become economically unviable, and everyone will be back to recycling "old" contents.

Jerk Off Robotics

Is it just me? Or does anyone else look at this video of Dean Kamen's robotic arms and think about what this application might do for sex work? And, no, I am not even kidding. Occasionally, I babble on here about how the porn industry as we know it is dying, and its replacement will be truly interactive pixelated porn stars. Of course, at some point in this future, another virus will replace HIV as the horror of our sexual future, causing humans to crave the proximity of other bodies that pixelated porn will deny them even as they simultaneously fear contamination from these foreign bodies. Robotics will bridge the gap. I watched this video and imagined one of these robotic arms rendered fleshy, attached to a future sex worker, who wouldn't even have to touch a customer looking for a mechanical happy ending. Technical Difficulties [Updated]

This blog is experiencing technical difficulties. Overnight, the blog has turned all the posts into single-space rather than double-space. Single-spaced is wrong. Double-spaced is what I want. A Reverse Cowgirl technician is looking into the matter, but if you are technologically savvy enough to know how to resolve this problem, email me, please.

Update: The Reverse Cowgirl Technician has resolved the technical difficulty. Thank you for your patience during this trying time. As you were.

A Pornographic Coolhunting Manifesto

The other day, I added a tagline to this blog: Pornographic Coolhunting. What does it mean? Damned if I know. I've loved the idea of coolhunting ever since I read Gladwell's cutting edge at the time coolhunter profile. And it seems today, what with sex ruling everything around us, a... sexual? erotic? pornographic coolhunter would be in order.

I guess what I coolhunt for is what's sexual, erotic, pornographic--but more. Like what porno-chic was supposed to be, before it turned into a bunch of sweaty snapshots and got co-opted by American Apparel. This is that but taken to the level of haute-couture. Debauchette calls her version of it "haute-pervure." Siege's work is the idea in action.

Of course, Porn Valley is having none of it. The latest trend they jumped on was alt-porn. Tattooed chicks getting nailed is not an art movement. I don't think porn will ever produce what we're getting at. But that industry will die. People will create their own porn digitally. And someone will do it beautifully.

What if this was hardcore?

Village Voice Does Reverse Cowgirl

Thanks so much to Bonnie Ruberg for mentioning this blog, Letters from Working Girls, and Letters from Johns in her Village Voice column, "Heroine Sheik," where she studies the intersection of sex and technology.

"Add another site to the official Heroine Sheik recommendation list: writer Susannah Breslin’s sex and culture blog Reverse Cowgirl. Frank, insightful, and fun, Reverse Cowgirl covers everything from relationship art (virtual girlfriend, anyone?) to high heels for strippers."

Thanks, Bonnie!

The Future of Sex in Video Games

Cory Doctorow points to this amusing animated exploration of the sexual possibilities of video games by Savannah College of Art and Design Professor Daniel Floyd. After tracking the controversy laden history of sex in video games, Floyd suggests that intimacy and relationships in the medium hold promise as providing context for a sexual element that would more fully represent the human experience. I don't think, though, this is the answer. I think the fact of the matter is that technology is still in the dinosaur era, and that because sex is of the body, and technology, for the most part, remains a separate nuts and bolts entity, the gap between the two prevents people and technology from fully engaging when it comes to sex. Another way of putting that? You can't fuck your computer. Not yet, anyway. But when you can, oh, the fun you'll have in video game land.

Your Virtual Girlfriend

If you haven't seen it already, Reverse Cowgirl Patron Saint Xeni Jardin has posted this tasty tidbit about an NYU tele-arts student's virtual girlfriend project.

"It's simple to behold — a single mattress, tucked into a dark, curtained back room of the showcase space. On it: a lithe brunette. She's perfectly quiet, but once you sit or lie down, she responds to your every move. Lie on your back, she snuggles up right next to you in a log position. Curl up in the fetal position, she spoons."

Where's the virtual boyfriend for the ladies?

Return to the Unporny Valley

This week's episode of "30 Rock" featured a storyline in which Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) attempts to create the XXX holy grail of 21st century pop-culture artifacts: a porn video game--because he wants to leave a legacy of import behind for his children. Kotaku has the clip in which Frank explains why it can't be done and teaches Tracy about the Uncanny Valley. Which reminded me of the graph above, which I made last year. The whole episode is pretty fucking funny. In all this Grand Theft Auto IV handwringing over the issue of sex and violence, there's been little discussion of this theory. The fact of the matter is that the simulated sex in GTA IV isn't very graphic--or very realistic. The satire inherent to the game is taken to the level of parody when you watch the way the pixels try and make the girls' jiggle wiggle realistically. I think what I find most striking is how exquisitely embarrassing this whole debate will be in hindsight, a few decades into the future, when our digital renderings of human sexuality look like Lascaux cave drawings to the perverts of the future. Of course, the consequences of the virtualization of pornography are of great interest to me. As it turns out, it's this kind of sex that will be what kills the real porn industry in the end--not Bush or his anti-porn replacements of the future. Porn stars will be replaced by fem bots who fuck the way our controls them to. Who knows, maybe we'll all be the better for it.
When I was an adult, I picked up a hooker in Vice City. After my car swayed gently to her moaning, I let her get out of the car and I then ran over her, got out of the car and took my money back.

Did I feel bad? No. She was made up of pixels and artificial intelligence, not life, and I guess I could tell the difference.

Completely off subject, but I wish we would hurry up and make some robot hookers. I'm looking at you Japan. -- Billydeville

Behind the Scenes at the Reverse Cowgirl

(via)
Here at Reverse Cowgirl Labs, I get to peek behind the curtain that is the American facade and see what's going on inside of the American mind. How? There are no endless rows of bubbling over test tubes, no padded rooms outfitted with electric shock machines, and no gurneys upon which I perform illegal vivisections here. To understand what you people really want I need look no further than this blog's search engine query log. It's like the XXX-rated version of Google Zeitgeist. And what's my conclusion? You people are weird. Take yesterday, for example. The first query of the day that caught my eye was "porn star with tattoo around her anus." As someone who has spent far, far too much time around the American porn industry, I was not particularly impressed by the idea of a porn star with a tattoo "around her anus." After all, if you've chosen a career in which your nether regions garner more on-camera time than your face, why not embellish your asshole? What I wonder is who is searching for the porn star with the tattooed anus? I am willing to bet it is some guy at State Farm in Skokie. The next one that got my attention was a search for "fisting gone wrong porn." Another thing I've learned in my extensive studies is that--for the most part--people's sexual fantasies are really particular. This individual is not interested in porn, he's interested in fisting porn, and he's not interested in just any fisting porn, he's interested in fisting gone wrong porn. Surely, it's only a matter of time before a Porn Valley producer reads this and starts churning out "Fisting Gone Wrong," the AVN Award-winning adult video. The next query of note was "tall girls with midgets male porn site." I am not even sure what to say about this one. Who is the person with the tall girls having sex with midget men porn fetish? Where does this person live? What does this person look like? Most importantly, did his online quest for his sexual holy grail end in happiness--or in heartbreak? Sadly, I do not know the answers to any of these pressing questions. After that, this query came down the pipeline: "Can you be a porn star?" I get asked this question a lot. The answer is always the same. No, you cannot. Following on the heels of that existential question came one of the most popular phrases that brings searchers to these pastures: "Jenna Jameson fucking." Of course, there are many permutations of this phrase: "Jenna Jameson having sex," "Jenna Jameson vagina," "Jenna Jameson porn." One of my all-time favorites was "Jenna Jameson with penis going into vagina." Thank you for clarifying. What always baffles me about this query is wouldn't it have been enough to type in "Jenna Jameson"? It seems like the whole "having sex" part is rather redundant, seeing as "Jenna Jameson" and "porn" are kind of like the same thing. Later, I saw someone had come here while looking for "Gloria Steinem." Whoever you are, I apologize. A few minutes after that, I found what may have been my favorite query of the day: "MONKEY FUCK." Monkey fuck, indeed, my friend! I have no idea what this human was looking for but I appreciate their sexual creativity and the erotic passion that drove them to use all caps. And so, Godspeed, Monkey Fucker, for who knows what today will bring.

Portrait of the Porn Star as a Young Artist

Oriana Small, aka Ashley Blue, has another terrific blog post. This time, she writes about dressing up like a toilet for Halloween, how she's reprogramming her abused brain, and the new Britney Spears.
I wore a toilet seat on my head as a Halloween costume.
I want to be a toilet sometimes...
I'm using my brain again.
It's been seriously neglected and abused for the last five years.
Exercise of the mind is a continuous high.

2008 SXSW Interactive Festival

Cory Silverberg has asked me to be on a panel at the 2008 SXSW Interactive Festival. It's called "The Future of Sex in Interactive Narrative": "As audiences, technologies, and businesses evolve, interactive sex narratives continue to take their lead from some of the worst traits in pornography, instead of taking the best from the bizarre and complicated range of human sexual experience. From emergent sex in MMORPGs to virtual fembots and art-core sex blogs, we will look at the highs and lows of interactive sex narratives and suggest future directions where sex on line is worth the ride." The House That Porn Bought

Last weekend's New York Times Magazine includes a lengthy feature on Kink.com, the San Francisco-based company that produces fetish videos for online distribution that recently drew public attention when it bought an armory for $15 million to be its new home. The story is long, and, in the tradition of most stories about sex written for the Times, it is completely fucking boring. The lone description of what Kink actually does is a grim depiction of a woman beating a man. Kink.com, though, has got it right when it comes to next-gen porn-making. In these days of worldwide internet porn distribution, Porn Valley is fast losing its dominion, and those who find a niche and master the means of its distribution will thrive as big budget porn features manufactured by old school porn production companies are fading. Kink.com founder Peter Acworth has found his forte in fetish. The gonzo porno guys at Bangbus are conquering the field of pro-am porn. Eventually, they'll be replaced by digital, and Porn Valley will be a memory, an artifact of a puritanical American past when pornography was taboo and porn stars were real.
